Revamped SEPB ready for challenges

Published July 7, 2008

Scottsboro Electric Power Board will have three new board members to guide the utility in meeting upcoming challenges.

The Scottsboro City Council recently voted to increase the board from three to five members. The new members are Margaret Gross, Larry Bradford and Allen Williams who join Grady Jacobs and Bud Cook on the board.

Gross is now the chairman of the board, and Williams serves as vice chairman.

Gross has been in the bridal and formal wear business for 36 years and is the owner of The Century House in Scottsboro. She also previously served as a board member on the Scottsboro Housing Authority. She has two daughters, Laura who lives in Los Angeles and Rachel who lives in New York City.

Bradford worked for the Scottsboro Electric Power Board for 29 years before making a career change. He now trains linemen at the Southeastern Lineman Training Center in Georgia, a position he has held for three years. Bradford is married and has four children.

Williams served as senior vice president and division manager in New York for Warner Brothers Communications. He was responsible for building Scottsboro's original cable system in the 1960s and later bought into the Scottsboro Cable TV system which he later sold. Williams is currently the owner of Neal Technology and Scottsboro Auto Parts.

"I look forward to working with the new board members in our efforts to provide efficient and economical services to the people of Scottsboro," said James Sandlin, manager of the Scottsboro Electric Power Board.

Sandlin said the power board is facing several challenges in the near future, including an expected increase in TVA wholesale power adjustments and a projected increase in programming costs for the cable system over the next year.

"Mr. Williams has experience in cable, and Mr. Bradford has experience on the electric side. Mrs. Gross has experience in the business world and is familiar with public operations," Sandlin said.

Sandlin said he feels the new board members' expertise will be extremely helpful in meeting these challenges in the most efficient way possible.
