Vet receives medal 40 years after service

Published June 17, 2005

It was a long time coming, but Bill Zensan finally received his Air Medal from the United States government this week for his military service during the Vietnam War.

Major General Pillsbury from Redstone Arsenal presented Zensan with the medal during a ceremony held Tuesday at the Scottsboro Nutrition Center. Zensan is a volunteer with the Scottsboro Nutrition Center and chose to celebrate this special day in his life with his friends at the center.

Scottsboro Nutrition Center Manager Brenda Gass and Theresa Dulaney of the Council on Aging planned a reception in Zensan’s honor following the medal presentation. Captain D’s donated door prizes for the reception.

Pillsbury said he had a special respect for Vietnam veterans because they “served their country at a time when the country turned its back on them.”

Zensan served in the Vietnam War from 1960-63 and later joined the Coast Guard. He received the Air Medal for his outstanding service during his time in Vietnam.“This means a lot to me,” Zensan said. “It was a long time coming. It got lost in the shuffle.”
