City board recognizes excellence

The Scottsboro Board of Education recognized several individuals and groups for excellence athletically and in the classroom during its regularly scheduled monthly meeting Monday night at Page Elementary School.
The junior high school cheerleaders, who finished third overall in the Alabama High School Athletic Association cheerleading championships, were recognized for their accomplishments.
The board also recognized the Scottsboro High School girls basketball team, the varsity wrestling team and recognized several teachers for their work in the classroom.
Coach Jerry Kirkland and the Lady Wildcats were honored for reaching the 5A Northeast Regional Finals. The team finished the season at 26-4 overall posting the most wins in school history.
Scottsboro's wrestlers, coached by Chris Staton, won their third straight 5A state championship during the state meet held in Huntsville. The Wildcats placed eight wrestlers in the championship finals and more than doubled second place Arab's point total.
Teachers of the year were recognized from three of the system's elementary schools.
Krista Shankles was tabbed at Brownwood; Carrie Day, Caldwell; and Brad Dudley, Collins. Dudley was also recognized as teacher of the year for the system.
Sylvia Craft was honored as both the teacher of the year at Scottsboro High School and as secondary teacher of the year in the system.
In other business the board:
• Approved Linda Knight as a sixth grade teacher at Collins Elementary School from March 31 through May 23, replacing Erica Russell who is scheduled to take maternity leave.
• Approved a leave of absence for Jamie Hardman, special education teacher at Collins Elementary School, from April 25 through May 23.
• Approved a travel request for Patricia Combs to attend the National Educational Computing Conference in San Antonio, Texas June 29 through July 2.
• Announced that the next meeting will be on March 31, at 5 p.m.
