Country music legend Charlie Louvin honored
Published April 22, 2005
Country music legend and Jackson County native Charlie Louvin was honored in Scottsboro Wednesday as April 20 was declared Charlie Louvin Day.
While speaking on air at WWIC radio station with Tim Jones, Louvin was surprised by Scottsboro Mayor Dan Deason with a plaque proclaiming April 20 as Charlie Louvin Day and a key to the city. Louvin was in the middle of a guest appearance at WWIC when he received the news.
Louvin was born in Henagar in 1927 and went on to achieve great fame in country and gospel music with his brother Ira as the Louvin Brothers and later as a solo artist.
From their first paying gig on July 4, 1940, providing background music for a fair merry-go-round to becoming Grand Ole Opry members in 1955, the brothers achieved fame early in their career. Elvis Presley was their opening act in a 1955 tour.
The Louvin Brothers have been cited as musical influences by such diverse musicians as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, the Beatles and Jerry Garcia.
Louvin was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October of 2001.
In reading the proclamation, Deason stated that Louvin’s more than half a century of contributions to country and gospel music have made him an American music icon.
