Lunch prices to increase at county schools

Published April 24, 2009

Jackson County students will notice an increase in lunch prices when school starts in August.

The Jackson County Board of Education voted Monday to increase lunch prices from $1.50 to $2 beginning Aug. 10. Breakfast prices will remain $1.

Superintendent Kenneth Harding said the price increase was necessary because now it costs the school system more money to purchase and prepare food. State and federal guidelines have established stricter requirements about the nutritional content and preparation of foods for school lunches. For example, foods can no longer be fried.

"The cost has gone up about 22 percent for us," Harding said.

Harding said the school system has tried to put off raising prices as long as possible.

In other business, the board:

•Tabled approving a job description for assistant network administrator.

•Voted to change the HVAC technician job description to refrigeration/CNP equipment technician.

•Approved changes in the job descriptions for network administrator, instructional technology specialist and computer technician.

•Approved family medical leave for Autumn Cannon, teacher at Section High School, for April 14 through May 12.
