Weed group set to spray

Published May 13, 2009

The Roseberry Rescue group met the Scottsboro City Council's conditions in order to receive funding for its project of spraying and killing Hydrillia and Milfoil on Roseberry Creek, an embayment of the Tennessee River.

In order for the city council to participate in the project, the Roseberry group had to receive committments from at least two other parties, paying an amount of $42,500 each.

Homeowners quickly raised their portion of the money. However, the Jackson County Commission, in a recent meeting, failed to act on a motion to disapprove the funding.

Only hours before Monday's council meeting, the local Legistlative Delegation pledged $42,500 to the Roseberry group. The delegation consists of State Sen. Lowell Barron and representatives John Robinson and Butch Taylor. It will use TVA in lieu of tax money to help pay for the project.

At Monday's meeting, city attorney Steve Kennamer said the council didn't have to vote on approving their portion of the money.

"No vote is necessary," said Kennamer. "Conditions of the resolution have been met."

Retired Circuit Judge Wallace Haralson, who has served as spokesperson for the Roseberry Rescue group, thanked the city council.

"Our group appreciates the council's initital support in recognizing how important it is in keeping the lake healthy," said Haralson. "It's a critical need, and the city council and Legistlative Delegation had the foresight to step up to the plate."

The Roseberry group now has $127,500 raised for the project, three quarters of the $170,000 needed.

Haralson said the group has a line of credit at a local bank for the rest.

"We will also continue fund-raising," he said.
