Council approves new 911 dispatcher
Published May 28, 2009
The Scottsboro City Council gave its approval for the hiring of a new dispatcher for the Jackson County 9-1-1 Center Tuesday evening.
The council met on Tuesday, due to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday.
Police Chief Ralph Dawe told council members the 9-1-1 Board recently approved funding for a new dispatcher.
"The goal is to man each 9-1-1 work section," said Dawe. "There's four work sections and right now three are manned on a normal basis."
The 9-1-1 board is providing the funding to hire the new person, Dawe said.
With the new addition, the 9-1-1 board provides funding for eight dispatchers, while the city provides funding for seven.
Dawe said the board is hoping the city will also add another dispatcher.
"Their problem is genuine," said Dawe. "They handle the whole county."
In other business, the council:
• Approved the new police department manual.
• Approved a contract with Barge, Wagnor and Sumner for an airport grant worth $273,000.
• Approved an alcohol beverage license for Gorjit Singh (formerly known as Pinky's).
• Reappointed Jim Olyniec to the Goose Pond Board by a 3-2 vote. Councilmen Keith Smith, Matthew Hodges and Terry Thomas voted in favor, while councilmen Gary Speers and Thermon Bell voted against.
