Friends to help tornado victims
Published March 19, 2008
Join with friends and neighbors Thursday night to help raise money for a good cause.
The Friends Helping Friends dinner and auction to raise money for victims of the Feb. 6 tornado in Jackson County will be held March 20 from 5 until 8:30 p.m. at Scottsboro-Goose Pond Civic Center. Tickets for the event will be $25 each.
The tornado left a path of destruction through Pisgah, Rosalie and Flat Rock, and many families are still trying to recover from the damage to their homes and businesses.
The event is being organized by Frank and Glenda Pylant with help from many friends and neighbors.
Their goal is to raise $25,000, and Frank said they believe they will make that goal. Frank said they are expecting 500 people to attend the event.
“This will be an action packed 3 and a half hours,” Frank said.
There will be celebrity waiters and entertainment provided by Kenny, Trey, Coach and Friends. Some of the celebrity waiters will include Debbie Woods, Jim Boatner, Ken Looney, Rick Roden, J.P. Parsons, Carl Marona, Ray Keller, Gail Duffey, and Lisa Cook who will also be singing. Lisa is the wife of Alabama guitarist Jeff Cook.
Frank will be the auctioneer, and they have some great items, including Kenny Chesney concert tickets, a four night stay at the Aqua Resort in Panama City, televisions, quail and turkey hunts with guide and dogs, wildlife framed pictures, plane rides, Ducks Unlimited prints, Kona coffee, three Air Evac one-year memberships, crystal, cookbooks and Alabama and Auburn memorabilia donated for the event.
Both the silent and live auction will end at 7:30 p.m. The live auction will only last from 7 until 7:30 p.m.
The organizers will be giving away 14 NOAA weather radios as door prizes.
Dinner will feature Southern barbecue with meats donated by Scottsboro Meats, Rocket City Meats and Pilgrim’s Pride. The 245 pounds of chicken and Boston butt roasts will be cooked on site by Scott Glover. The Docks Restaurant will cater and serve the side dishes and desserts. A cash bar will be set up from 5 until 7:30 p.m.
All proceeds will benefit Jackson County tornado victims. Checks should be made payable to the Salvation Army of Jackson County with a special note stating the money is for the Jackson County Tornado Relief Fund.
