SSA bests Decatur
Published June 23, 2009
SSA moved to 4-1 this summer with a big victory over the visiting Decatur Aquatics Club Thursday evening in a battle that pitted the 2nd and 3rd place teams from last year’s District championships.
The relay events proved decisive, as Scottsboro only narrowly led the individual events. A 15-5 edge in the relay events however was more than Decatur could overcome.
Scottsboro swimmers Logan Anderson, Kyla Reichle, Kyle Vosen, Jessica Duncan, Zach Reichle, Craig Cleaver and Rylee Powell earned sweeps of their individual races. Winning two races apiece were Mark Richard, Phillip Klepper, Shannon Bradbury and Matt Brewer.
Other winners for Scottsboro included Ben Gossett, Kolton Clark, Davis Bostrom, Emily Garner, Elizabeth Guinn, Emma Stewart and Nate Brewer.
The 15-18 Boys led SSA with 57 points. Rylee Powell led the squad with 15 points, followed by Matt Brewer with 13. Nate Brewer (8), Chris Witmoyer (4), and Nathan Bradbury (3) all scored and aided in the sweep of the Medley and Freestyle Relays. The team was also energized by the return of Max Bivens and Will Conner.
The 8-Under Boys were close behind with 56 points. Logan Anderson’s hat trick was worth 15 points, but there were also big contributions from Davis Bostrom (11), Ben Gossett (8) and Kolton Clark (8). Also swimming very well were Staton Robbins, Kolby Clark, Ty Latham, Skylar Reichle and Blake Roberts.
The 11-12 Boys continued their run with another 53 points, led by Zach Reichle’s 15. Every swimmer scored in this age group, including Mark Richard (10), Drew Butler (9), Patrick Duncan (3), Dalton Parks (1) and John Paul Stolz (1).
The 8-Under Girls came away with 50 points and victories in 5 of the 6 individual events, led by another sweep from Kyla Reichle (15 pts.). Emily Garner (8), Megan Vosen (7), Elizabeth Guinn (5) and Shelby Latham (1) all scored, with Guinn notching her first ever victory in the 25 Back. Pitching in with fine races were Grace Butler, Lily Green, Madison Cole, Anna Leigh Gossett, Madeline Gossett and Holly Anderson.
Jessica Duncan’s sweep of the IM, Fly and Long Free resulted in 15 points to lead the 9-10 Girls to a total of 48 points. Emma Stewart captured her first win of the summer in the 50 Breast and added 6 points. Also scoring were Anna Richard (7) and Elizabeth Rains (6), while Maryann Jones, Erin Valentine, Cortney Hobbs, Amanda Albin, Savannah Latham, Wimberly Haston, Carli Johnson, Leslie Gomez and Taylor Welch swam very capably behind the leaders.
The 11-12 Girls faced their stiffest competition of the summer, but still came away with 34 points, led by Amelia Adkins with 7. Mary Margaret Green (6), Mary Catherine Gossett (5), Hannah Altonji (1) and Alexis Heaton (1) all cracked the scoring column. Karah Kirkland, Shonna Browder, Nina Stewart, Celia Venable and Cheltsey Kowdis each flirted with points as well.
The 9-10 Boys were led by 15 points from their ace Kyle Vosen. Jon Brady Sandlin had 7 points, and Caleb Guinn and Blake Wright continued to improve.
The 13-14 Girls managed 18 points thanks to a pair of wins from Shannon Bradbury, who totaled 11 points on the evening. Hailey Altonji (3), Meghan Travis (3) and Mary Ellen Sandlin (1) rounded out the group’s scoring.
Hannah Thompson paced the 15-18 Girls with 6 points, followed by 5 from Ashley Carter and 3 from Morgan Rogers. The late arrival of Thompson and MaKalea Kirkland allowed the group to come away with the upset in the Freestyle Relay.
Scottsboro hits the road for a big meet with an improved Albertville Gators squad on Tuesday.
