Section snags Top 5-finish

Published November 17, 2009

The Section girls cross country team recorded its best finish at state on Saturday, placing fifth in the Class 1A-2A girls race at the AHSAA state meet at Oakville Indian Mounds State Park.

Section has reached state in all four of its seasons since the program began in 2006.

The Lions finished seventh at state in their inaugural season in 2006 and followed that with consecutive sixth-place finishes in 2007 and 2008.

American Christian Academy of Tuscaloosa won the 1A-2A girls state championship with a low score of 39, as all five of its scoring runners finished in the Top 15.

Athens Bible finished second (85 points), while Cold Springs was third (120), Westminster Christian fourth (123) and Section fifth (152) to round out the top five.

Robin Wynn led the Section effort on Saturday, placing 16th — one spot way from all-state honors — with a time of 22:41.96.

Teammate Taylor Adams followed in 19th-place (22:55.67), while Jordan McCarver was 39th (24:26.89), Samantha Mc-Collough 40th (24:30.10), Jazzy Moore 86th (28:35.40) and Jessica McCollough 98th (30:35.88).

None of Section's six state runners are seniors.

Class 1A-2A Boys
In the Class 1A-2A Boys race, Section sophomore Josh Williamson finished 114th (25:05.33), while freshman Kelly Gray was 122nd (29:55.12).
