Hollywood town council selects Bergman mayor
Published July 9, 2009
Just three weeks after taking office as a city council member, Virginia Bergman became Mayor of Hollywood Tuesday night.
The council, in a 3-1 vote, chose Bergman.
Bergman and Phillip Dutton, who were sworn in as council members on Tuesday, June 16, were both appointed by Alabama Gov. Bob Riley after resignations left the council without a quorum. Both had previously served the town.
Two council members, Brenda Ledwell and Denise Judd, resigned following an executive session on June 2. Mayor Tommy Allen turned in his resignation the following day leaving the town without a governing body.
Allen, who at one time served as the town's fire chief, was in his first term of office after defeating Frank "Buster" Duke in a runoff last fall. Allen won the position by 11 votes.
The council reappointed Ledwell after Bergman and Dutton were sworn in to office. Anita Marlow and Ann Martin are the other council members. Marlow serves as Mayor Pro Tem.
Attempts to reach Mayor Bergman Wednesday for comment and the council’s plans for the future were unsuccessful.
