Changes Proposed for A-School

Published December 14, 2006

The Scottsboro school system's alternative school is to be moved from its site in the Collins Elementary School building to the former Central Office during the second semester of this school year, and a proposal is to require those students to wear uniforms.

Scottsboro Board of Education had a reading on a revised alternative education program policy at its meeting Monday night, but as required is waiting until next month to vote on adoption of it.

There are some 10 students from Scottsboro Junior High and Scottsboro High School enrolled in the alternative school. A proposal in the policy would require alternative school students to wear uniforms, which it does not require now.

Dr. Judy Berry, superintendent of Scottsboro schools, was out of town for meetings of school administrators Wednesday and could not be reached for comment.

The mission of the alternatiuve education program in Scottsboro is to prepare students for future success by providing a supportive school environment that focuses on increasing academic and pro-social behaviors and skills while providing functional life skills instruction, according to the proposed policy revision.

The proposal states in part: "Small classes and individualized approaches will be designed to meet the needs of each student. Components of the program include, but are not limited to counseling, mentoring, community service, and technology. Students who are placed in the program are subject to random drug testing, which will be administered by the School Resources Officers and/or other designated school officials."

The Board of Education will not be responsible for transportation to and from the alternative education site. Students must be transporteed by parents or guardians to and from the location.

The proposal says, "Alternative Education Program students will be required to wear uniforms, which will be purchased by the parents/guardians."

The Alternative Program currently in effect was adopted on August 25, 1988.
