Commission seeks to spend $115,000

Published July 23, 2009

The Jackson County Commission is asking the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs for permission to utilize more than $115, 000 remaining from a grant the county received last year.

At an emergency meeting Wednesday afternoon, the commission unanimously approved a resolution to send a request to ADECA, asking that the agency allow the remaining money be used to continue extending the public water lines in the Estillfork and Larkins Fork areas.

Commission Chair Sadie Bias said the low bid for the project was $115,017.50 less than the $400,000 grant funds. She said they were asking ADECA to use the money so they could continue the water line project to benefit more people in that area.

Bias said the first phase of the project, done by Lambert, Inc. in Stevenson, has been completed. The company would continue where it left off if the commission's request is approved.

The county was awarded the Community Development Block Grant in November 2008 to allow the Jackson County Water Authority to extend water lines north from the Swaim community. The water authority provided $160,000 in matching funds for the grant.

The new lines provide residents a steady water supply without reliance on wells. At the time the grant was awarded, it was expected to serve approximately 126 residents.

Gov. Bob Riley had previously awarded Jackson County $400,000 in 2005 to extend the system.

The next regular meeting of the Jackson County Commission will be Monday, July 27 at 5 p.m.
