Former county commissioner dies

Published February 12, 2009

Jackson County is mourning the death of one of its beloved sons.

Ben Matthews, a former county commissioner and Scottsboro Police officer, passed away last Saturday at the age of 93.

"This whole county has lost a good person," said Scottsboro City Councilman Keith Smith, who also worked with Matthews at the police department. "He represented this county and Scottsboro well. He loved the people of this county."

Smith, who served as Scottsboro's police chief before running for city council, said his first day on the job, 39 years ago, was with Matthews as his partner.

"He was a good positive role model for me," Smith said. "I don't think Ben had a bad bone in his body. He was just a really good person."

Born in Bridgeport in 1915 and also a veteran of the U.S. Army, Matthews worked as a police officer from 1969-1981 before being elected county commissioner.

Many folks remember him enforcing traffic around the square in Scottsboro.

He loved to fish and could be found almost daily at the boat dock in the county park.

Matthews also loved to eat breakfast at Hardees on Broad Street each morning.

"He was able to get around and do things right up until his death," said Smith. "He will surely be missed."

Matthews was buried Monday in Pinehaven Memorial Gardens.
