Sheriff’s Department to get new car

Published August 11, 2009

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is in line to receive a new patrol vehicle through a $25,000 grant awarded by Alabama Gov. Bob Riley.

Riley recently awarded grants totaling $211,734 to help nine law enforcement agencies across Alabama purchase needed equipment.

"When our police officers, deputies and district attorneys have the proper equipment to perform their jobs, the safety of all residents is enhanced," said Riley. "These grants will help Alabama's law enforcement officers increase their effectiveness."

Jackson County Sheriff Dennis Miller said he has placed the order for the new vehicle and hopes to have it delivered by October.

"During these tough economic times, it's certainly welcomed and much needed," Miller said of the grant.

Riley also awarded the following grants:

• $21,906 to the city of Oxford in Calhoun and Talladega counties for implementation of E-Crash and E-Citation technology. E-Crash is an electronic crash reporting system, and E-Citation allows officers to print tickets from their patrol cars.

• $22,320 to the city of Talladega for video cameras to be installed inside patrol cars.

• $23,531 to the town of Steele in St. Clair County for a new police vehicle.

• $25,000 to the city of Sumiton in Walker and Jefferson counties for in-car video camera systems.

• $25,000 to the town of Kennedy in Lamar County for an all-terrain vehicle, radar equipment, alcohol-detection equipment and cameras.

• $24,958 to the city of Spanish Fort in Baldwin County for a sport utility vehicle, communication equipment and a thermal imaging camera to help locate people during a natural disaster.

• $22,149 to the town of Kinsey in Houston County for a new police car with camera equipment installed.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice.
