Firefighters sentenced in arson case

Published November 4, 2009

Two former Woodville volunteer firefighters pleaded guilty this week in Jackson County Circuit Court in an arson case involving a barn fire in March.

A third suspect, who remained at large for nearly a month before being arrested in Texas, also pleaded guilty in the case.

The barn, owned by Bill Evans of Woodville, burned to the ground on March 8.

Former volunteer firefighters Travis Edward Wallace of Woodville and Casey Duane Wilkerson of Scottsboro each received an eight-year prison sentence from Circuit Judge John Graham.

Graham sentenced Edward Lee Childress of Athens to 10 years in prison.

The case was investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Wallace and Wilkerson were arrested in June, while Childress was arrested a month later in Texas by the U.S. Marshal’s Office and State Fire Marshal’s Office.

All three defendants were charged and convicted of Arson Second Degree. They will also be required to make restitution in the case.

Jackson County District Attorney Charlie Rhodes said the efforts of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, as well as the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Woodville Volunteer Fire Department, were appreciated in the case.

“It can be very difficult to catch arsonists, and we are glad that these three were arrested and have been held accountable,” Rhodes said.
