Dinosaurs Alive in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Published March 30, 2007
The new IMAX 3D Theater film “Dinosaurs Alive! 3D” at the Tennessee Aquarium brings viewers face to face with giants from the past.
The adventurous and breath-taking film begins on Friday, March 30.
This film features the earliest dinosaurs which are from the Triassic Period to monsters from the Cretaceous. These animals are brought back to life in amazing IMAX realism.
“Dinosaurs Alive! 3D” was shot on location in places ranging from the exotic sand dunes of the Mongolian Gobi Desert to the dramatic sandstone buttes of New Mexico. Following alongside American Museum of Natural History paleontologists, viewers are able to explore some of the greatest dinosaur finds in history. With IMAX 3D magic, these creatures are brought to life in a larger-than-life way.
In the 1920s, AMNH scientist and adventurer Roy Chapman Andrews led five expeditions to the Gobi Desert. Andrews is believed to be the inspiration for the character of Indiana Jones. He and his team discovered hundreds of dinosaur remains. Many of these dinosaur remains were new discoveries like the first Velociraptor. Just so happens, Andrews had taken a Hollywood cameraman along to film the expedition. This footage was preserved to provide audiences with a unique perspective into the field of paleontology.
The real stars of the movie are the dinosaurs themselves. Only an IMAX screen can make these creatures seem so lifelike. A very dramatic scene in the movie is when the Velociraptor and a Protoceratops are in combat. It is almost as if the ground shakes when the Seismosaurus, also known as the “thunder lizard” engulfs the whole screen with its 30-ton scaly body.
The film also teaches the audiences that dinosaurs traveled in herds, which dinosaurs made nests, which ones were the hunted and the hunters and many other facts about dinosaurs.
Today, fossils are still being found. Possibly more than ever before. Many great discoveries have been found over the last century. However, the quest to find and understand the monsters and the which in which they inhabited still continues.
It is estimated that less than two percent of all the dinosaur species that once lived have been discovered.
For some younger paleontologists, the quest is just beginning. This film sparks the mind to wonder what mysteries still lie beneath the earth undiscovered by man.
