Published June 18, 2009

The Scottsboro Board of Education has received more than $134,000 in federal recovery grant money for its Child Nutrition Program.

Dr. Judy Berry, Scottsboro City Schools Superintendent, announced during Tuesday night's called board meeting that the school system has received a total of $134,400 in federal recovery money sent to the state to help local Child Nutrition Programs. Berry said the federal government sent approximately $7 million in discretionary money to Alabama to be distributed to school systems that applied with grant applications for their Child Nutrition Program projects.

Scottsboro submitted three projects, which were all approved for funding.

Nelson Elementary School will receive a new walk-in cooler and freezer for $82,000.

Scottsboro Junior High School will receive a combination oven and steamer for their serving line for $36,800.

Collins Elementary School will receive a combination oven and steamer for their serving line for $15,600.

Berry also announced that the Alabama Elementary Administrator magazine has a story featuring the Alabama Reading Initiative program at Nelson Elementary School. Berry said the article praised Nelson's consistent application of the program and the high scores of its students.

Nelson principal Carla Kimball and reading coach Kim Fossett were interviewed for the feature story.
