Program to honor veterans

Published November 11, 2009

Its purpose is simple.

Its significance is worth celebrating.

Veterans Day reflects all that the United States of American represents. The day originally commemorated the end of World War I, known as “The Great War.” It remembers the heroic efforts of American soldiers and the efforts of the United States to fight for peace and justice around the world.

Today, Veterans Day is set aside to honor all of America’s veterans. It recognizes their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice during times of peace and war.

The City of Scottsboro, American Legion Post 30 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6073 will honor veterans, their families and those troops now serving in the armed forces on Wednesday in the auditorium at Collins Elementary School.

Colonel Chris Morgan of the Alabama National Guard will be the featured speaker.

The Fort Payne High School graduate has served overseas in Europe, Korea and Afghanistan. Morgan also attended Northeast Alabama Community College, Jacksonville State University and Auburn University.

Ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. The Scottsboro High School Band will perform patriotic music beginning at 10:30 a.m.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first celebration of Armistice Day in November 1919, approximately a year after the end of WWI on Nov. 11, 1918. He believed that the day should be observed with parades and public meetings displaying pride in the American soldiers contributions to end the war.

Since the original proclamation there have been several changes in the observance of the day. The name was changed in 1954 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued he first Veterans Day Proclamation, at the urging of veterans service organizations, to recognize all veterans in the wake of World War II and the Korean conflict.

President Gerald R. Ford recognized the significance of the Nov. 11 date in 1975 when he signed a bill into law requiring that the annual observance be held on its original date beginning in 1978.

Veterans Day is observed on Nov. 11, regardless of what day of the week it falls. It is also designated as a state and federal holiday and government offices and schools close.
