Chiefs playoff bound after downing Plainview

Published April 9, 2010

The North Jackson Chiefs used a rally to make sure their season extends past the end of the regular season.

North Jackson rallied from a big deficit to defeat visiting Plainview 8-7 in a winner makes the playoff contest Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Park..

The win clinched a playoff berth for the Chiefs (11-9, 4-2), who finished as the runner-up in Class 4A Area 14 to Guntersville and will travel to play the 4A Area 13 champion in a best-of-three first round playoff series beginning April 16.

“I am very proud of our team,” said North Jackson coach Dusty Roden. “We got down early, and we started battling. I told the guys to just start pecking away a little at a time and not to try and get all the runs back at one time and we would have a chance to win at the end.”

Will Richard got the win on the mound for the Chiefs. He went five innings and finished with four strikeouts. Zac Barnard, who has missed time with injury, threw two scoreless innings to close it out for North Jackson. “Zac Barnard took control of the game,” Roden said. “He threw a lot of strikes which put the batters at a disadvantage.”

Roden also bragged on North Jackson’s defense in the late innings.

“We got some big plays defensively late in the game,” Roden said. “Will Richard made a great catch in short right and Matt Payne scooped up the final out at first (base).”

Ryan Smith went 1-for-3 with three RBIs at the plate for North Jackson while Brandon Smith was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Zach Hammontree went 1-for-4 and scored a run while Robbie Padgett and Trent Chisenall scored two runs apiece.

“One thing I know from this group is that they will battle to the end,” Roden said. “We have had several guys step up each game. It has been a team effort each and every game.”
