Bison take down Lions
Published October 24, 2009
North Sand Mountain snapped two losing streaks with one victory Friday night.
NSM built a 21-0 halftime lead en route to a 28-0 victory over rival Section Loyd Dobbins Stadium at Higdon in the Class 2A Region 6 finale for both squads.
The victory snapped the Bison's 13-game losing streak in region play and also ended NSM's five-game losing streak to Section, who now lead the all-time series 20-17-1.
NSM (2-7, 1-6) took a 7-0 lead with 5:33 left in the first quarter thanks to Zak Walsh's 4-yard touchdown run and the first of Wesley Bethune's four PATs.
The Bison struck again moments later, when freshman Tyler Vann — who made his first start at quarterback — connected with Nick Baker for a 36-yard TD pass to make it 14-0 with 2:08 left in the first period.
NSM increased its advantage to 21-0 with 2:08 left before halftime when Dalton Gilliam scored on a 3-yard run. The Bison capped the scoring 29 seconds into the third quarter on a 65-yard TD pass from Vann to Walsh.
Vann finished 5-of-7 passing for 149 yards and two scores, which included a 40-yard completion to Shelby Hart during a first-half scoring drive. Max Kirby led the Bison ground game with 85 yards on 17 carries, while Walsh had 26 yards on three carries, Gilliam 22 yards on six carries and Hicks 21 yards on three carries. NSM finished with 334 total yards.
Justin Hicks finished with 10 tackles, five of which were for losses, and two quarterback sacks for NSM. Dillon Reece finished with eight tackles, while Andrew Duncan had seven tackles and a forced fumble and Cody Chamblee and Walsh had six tackles each. Walsh and Tyler Thomas had fumble recoveries for the Bison.
NSM closes its season next week by hosting Class 3A No. 10 Pisgah in a rivalry clash. Section (0-9, 0-7) hosts Woodville next Friday.
