County health fair Friday at senior center

The Jackson County Health Department, together with the Jackson County Council on Aging, area doctors, nurses, nutritionists and other healthcare professionals, will host the annual county health fair on Friday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Jackson County Senior Center.
“There’s a lot of good services that you’d have to pay a doctor for ... at least a co-pay and take time off for,” said Nita Nichols, senior nutritionist for the Jackson County Health Department who’s run the county-wide fair for the past four years.
Doctors, healthcare providers and community agencies scheduled to have booths at the event include Big C Drugs, the Scottsboro Police Department, Pinehaven Memorial LLC, Highlands Medical Center, Jackson County Health Department, Porch Home Medical, Complete Car, Jackson County Department of Human Resources, Heartlite Hospice, Northeast Alabama Health Services, Dr. Crystal Twynham, Dr. Desiree McGann, MMI Breast Center, Therapy Unlimited, Inc., massage therapist Julie Roden, massage therapist Amanda Necklaus, Comfort Care Hospice, Wiregrass Hospice and New Beacon Hospice.
Nichols said some of the featured booths will include bone density screenings, skin cancer screenings, hearing tests, blood glucose testing, mini massages, stress management and blood cholesterol tests.
A WIC nutrition booth will also be set up with information about the federal supplemental food program for women, infants and children.
Nichols said most of the booths are free to the public, noting that some charge a small fee to cover the cost of equipment used.
She said though the fair has had bigger numbers of seniors to participate in previous years, the event is open anyone in the community.
“We welcome people of all ages to participate,” Nichols said.
Last year, Nichols said, some 120 people came out for the annual fair.
“Last year was one of the best so far since I’ve been doing it,” she said.
Many of the booths will be offering door prizes throughout the morning again this year.
The Jackson County Senior Center is located on Rita Williams Drive, just inside the entrance to Jackson County Park in Scottsboro.
