Another win for SSA

Published June 23, 2009

The Guntersville Aquacats came to town Tuesday evening and ended up on the wrong end of a rout administered by Wet ‘n’ Wildcats, as a season-high 79 swimmers combined to outscore the visitors 465-208.

Scottsboro’s quality and depth was apparent across all age groups, as the Wildcats, who improved to 3-1 on the summer, had 25 different individual event winners and also claimed 15 of the 20 relay races.

Logan Anderson, Emily Garner, Kyla Reichle, Amelia Adkins, Phillip Klepper, Craig Cleaver and Shannon Bradbury swept all three of their individual events, with Klepper and Cleaver remaining unbeaten this summer.

Winning two races each were Kyle Vosen, Anna Richard, Zach Reichle, Mary Catherine Gossett, Hailey Altonji, Rylee Powell and Haley Abril.

Other winners included Kolton Clark, Davis Bostrom, Curtis Cooper, Jessica Duncan, Kristin Copeland, Drew Butler, Mark Richard, Mary Margaret Green, Meghan Travis, Matt Brewer and Ashley Carter.

Both the 8-Under Boys and Girls swept their races. The boys were led by Anderson’s 15 points and a trio of second-place efforts from Ben Gossett, who scored nine. Curtis Cooper and Davis Bostrom each tallied eight points, and Kolton Clark added 5. Also swimming well were Christian Hutson, Staton Robbins, Kolby Clark, Ty Latham and Skylar Reichle.

Emily Garner and Kyla Reichle are looking like the best duo in the District, and each scored 15 points Tuesday night. Megan Vosen added six points with a pair of second-place finishes, and Lily Green (four), Shelby Latham (three) and Madison Cole (one) also cracked the scoring column. Also with excellent races were Elizabeth Guinn, Grace Butler, Anna Leigh Gossett, Ashlyn Vosen, Madeline Gossett, Collins Bradford, Mattie Watwood and Holly Anderson.

Kyle Vosen’s 13 points led the 9-10 Boys. Vosen’s victory over Guntersville’s Cade Dollar in the IM was one of the night’s more exciting races. Vosen received scoring help from Jon Brady Sandlin (two) and Blake Wright (one) and also got support from Blake Welch and Caleb Guinn.

Scottsboro’s 9-10 Girls received scoring from six different swimmers. Along with 13 points from Anna Richard and 11 from Jessica Duncan, Kristin Copeland and Elizabeth Rains each scored five points, while Emma Stewart and Maryann Jones chipped in with one point apiece. Among the remaining girls who swam great races were Amanda Albin, Erin Valentine, Elena Hutson, Cortney Hobbs, Wimberly Haston, Savannah Latham, Taylor Welch, Leslie Gomez and Bethany Dugan.

The 11-12 Boys continued their summer dominance, led by Zach Reichle’s upset of Nicky Erwin in the IM. In addition to Reichle’s 13 points, the Cats also got victories from Mark Richard (11 points) and Drew Butler (nine) and additional scoring from John Paul Stolz (four) and Patrick Duncan (one). Connor Hutson and Dalton Parks both narrowly missed scoring.

Three different swimmers were part of the 11-12 Girls sweep, led by Amelia Adkins’ 15 points. Mary Margaret Green (11) and Mary Catherine Gossett (10) also notched wins, while Alexis Heaton (6), Karah Kirkland (three) and Hannah Altonji (three) each earned second-place honors. Including the relay victories, this group’s 64 points were a team-high on the evening.

Phillip Klepper and Craig Cleaver continued to own the opposition, as for the fourth consecutive meet each swept their races and scored 15 points.

A notable highlight was Cleaver’s blistering new team record time of 29.25 in the 50 Back. Daniel Pierce also contributed a point with a third-place finish in the 50 Free, his first career race.

The 13-14 Girls also engineered a sweep behind Shannon Bradbury’s 15 points. Hailey Altonji (11 points) had her first two victories of the summer, and Meghan Travis (8) also claimed a win in the 50 Back. Mary Ellen Sandlin added six points, and Tessa Hutson continued to swim well.

The 15-18 Boys had a strong showing behind Rylee Powell’s 11 points. Matt Brewer (nine), Nathan Bradbury (four), Nate Brewer (four) and Will Connor also had excellent efforts.

Ashley Carter and Haley Abril each scored 11 to pace the 15-18 Girls. Hannah Thompson (six) and Morgan Rogers (three) each had second-place finishes and rounded out the winning Freestyle Relay squad.
