Holt ‘catapults’ way to win

Published February 4, 2010

The fourth time’s a charm. C-H-A-R-M.

Four-time spelling bee participant Kaitlin Holt took home the top prize Wednesday in the Jackson County Spelling Bee.

Sixteen students from schools across the county faced the three-judge panel Wednesday morning inside the Collins Elementary School auditorium. Round One began shortly after 9:30 a.m..

As the rounds continued, spellers began dropping out until only Holt, a sixth grader at Collins Elementary, and Chase Herberholz, a seventh grader at Scottsboro Junior High School, were remaining.

The two squared off beginning in Round 11 and competed together for 11 more rounds before Holt successfully spelled the word “catapult” for the win.

Holt, who has participated in the county bee since the third grade, said she was excited to win her first, first-place honor this year. She was the county’s runner up in 2008.

“I really wanted to win this year,” Holt said. “I would have been mad at myself if I hadn't won.”

"It's really exciting," she added.

Herberholz was presented the runner up trophy.

Participants in this year's spelling bee were Holt, Alayna Cain of Skyline Elementary, Rachel McKnight of Hollywood Junior High, Ethan Jones of Pisgah High, Tristan Cleveland of Section High, Tiffany Guess of Stevenson Elementary, Regina Carter of Flat Rock Elementary, Jacob Gray of Macedonia Elementary, Courtney Bell of Nelson Elementary, Jesse Wooten of Bridgeport Middle, Miranda Holladay of Dutton Elementary, Chase Herberholz of Scottsboro Junior High, Jake Barrentine of Rosalie Elementary, Cody McBryar of North Sand Mountain High, Sean McAlpin of Caldwell Elementary and C.J. Cobb of Stevenson Middle.

The panel was composed of Lela Wilson, a retired schoolteacher; Rachel Cook, an employee of Cumberland Presbyterian Church; and Beth Mannon, coordinator of federal programs and parental involvement for Jackson County Schools.

Dennis Benefield of Scottsboro served as the pronouncer, and trophies were again provided this year by Jackson County Board of Education President Brenda Brown and her husband, E.J.

Holt will represent Jackson County in the 2010 Alabama Spelling Bee in March.
