NuStart, TVA to file Bellefonte application
Published October 30, 2007
NuStart Energy, a consortium of nuclear energy companies and vendors, including TVA, will present an application to license two Westinghouse AP1000 next generation nuclear reactors to the Nuclear Regulatory Agency in Washington, D.C. today.
The application is to be for the Bellenfonte Nuclear Plant site near Hollywood.
TVA will be the applicant for a Combined Operating License (COL) that serves a dual purpose of securing both a construction and operating license. The utilities board of directors has not made a decision to build at Bellefonte but by demonstrating the new process keeps its options open if approved.
The NRC review process should take approximately three and one-half years to complete.
The new review process seeks standardization in nuclear plant design and construction. The NRC hopes it will help identify and address critical issues early on and speed up the licensing process as the nation seeks to meet the growing demand for safe, clean and economical electricity.
NuStart allows its members to take a unified approach to the licensing process. Consortium members can share both the costs and risk associated with designing and building a new nuclear facility. Future applicants will be able to utilize information gained from the Bellefonte licensing process for similar facilities at other locations.
