Thursday accident ties up Hwy 40 traffic
Published March 16, 2007
Kelli Benson, 19, of Pisgah was killed and two other people were injured in a traffic accident Thursday on Alabama Highway 40, two miles up Sand Mountain from the Bob Jones Bridge over the Tennessee River.
Traffic was partially blocked and slowed on the roadway for more than two hours after the accident, which occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m.
Scottsboro Police Lt. Jim Keller and members of the police department directed traffic around one lane of the highway that was open and the wreck scene and other traffic lane was protected by Scottsboro police cars and two fire department trucks. Wreckers carried the two vehicles away after Trooper Sutton finished his on-scene investigation at about 1:30 p.m.
Bobby Franks, 81, and Bonnie Franks, 75, both of Scottsboro were injured in the accident. They were transported by Highlands ambulance to Highlands Medical Center.
The accident involved a 1995 Lincoln Continental, driven by Mr. Franks. Benson was the driver of a 1997 Pontiac. It appeared the Lincoln was traveling up the mountain and the Pontiac, which was struck broadside, down the mountain. The road was wet from rainy conditions Thursday morning.
