Patrick suffers knee injury in practice
Published August 13, 2008
Tana Patrick suffered a knee injury Monday that had he and North Jackson coaches fearing the worst.
Patrick, a linebacker/tight end who is ranked among the state’s top college football prospects, received some “encouraging news” during a doctors visit Tuesday, however.
“The doctor gave a pretty good report,” said North Jackson coach Shawn Peek, “so that was encouraging news.”
Peek said Patrick will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.
“He’ll be down for a while,” Peek said. “We’ll know more later this week.”
Patrick was working in a non-contact drill during Monday’s practice when he suffered the injury. Peek said the Scout.com four-star rated linebacker “planted and (the knee) buckled. It was one of those things where he didn’t fall right. You could tell when he went down something was wrong,” Peek said.
Patrick is ranked as the 47th best college football recruit in the nation by Scout.com. He is projected to play linebacker in college, and the site also has Patrick as the No. 2-ranked strongside linebacker. Rivals.com has him listed as the nation's No. 5-ranked linebacker.
Patrick was ranked the state’s No. 4 prospect by both The Tuscaloosa News and the Mobile Press-Register this summer.
The three-year starter for North Jackson has offers from numerous schools, including Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson and USC. Patrick has also been invited to play in the U.S. Army and the Under Armour All-American All-Star games.
Patrick was named the 2007 Alabama Sports Writers Association's Class 4A Lineman of the Year after recording 73 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions.
On offense, 10 of Patrick’s 15 receptions went for touchdowns, and he closed the season with 399 receiving yards. Patrick is already North Jackson's career leader in receiving yards (1,505), yards per catch (27.8) and touchdowns (22) and owns the single-season record for most touchdown catches (10).
