Wildcats finish second in Douglas

Published September 1, 2005

Scottsboro head coach Jeff Adkins was encouraged by his team’s play in the Douglas Volleyball Tournament.

After a season-opening loss to Crossville, Scottsboro rebounded with three victories and a second place tourney finish on Saturday.

“I’m proud of the girls,” Adkins said. “They have cut down on the mental mistakes and careless errors and are playing good team ball. It was a good tournament against some tough competition.

Adkins praised the play of Maura Brumley, Hilliary Patterson and Taylor Gladney for their defensive help. He also said setters Kim Proctor and Kristy Allen did a good job “blocking up front” at the net. He also praised the setters for good passes.

Here’s a breakdown of the Scottsboro’s tournament:

Scottsboro 25-25, Ashville 22-18: The Wildcats opened pool play with a two-game victory over Ashville.

“We were able to play a great match due to the fact that we did not miss a serve in the match,” Adkins said. “The girls played strong defense at the net and back row.”

Ashlie Gann had eight blocks.

Scottsboro 25-25, Hayden 13-10: Ashlie Gann had 21 points (21-of-22 serving) nine aces, and five kills while Laura Freeman added 11 kills and 13 points in the Wildcats’ win.

Lauren Duncan had nine points on serves, Chasley Bellomy five. Kristen Ferrell added five kills and three aces.

“The setters are making good decisions that enable us to convert passes to points,” Adkins said.

Scottsboro 25-25, Susan Moore 18-10: Duncan had nine points and two aces, while Danielle McCrary had seven points and three aces.

Gann added nine kills, while Freeman had five and McCrary four.

“We started slow and made some mistakes,” Adkins said. “I challenged the girls to make Susan Moore play our type of match.”

The win gave Scottsboro a 2-0 mark in pool play.

Scottsboro 25-25, Cherokee County 15-17: Freeman chipped in 18 points and six kills as Scottsboro advanced to the finals.

Gann added nine points and five kills, Proctor four points and four kills, Duncan 10 points and three aces, Bellomy eight points and three aces, Ferrell an ace and three kills and Gladney two aces.

“Cherokee County is a quick team,” Adkins said. “We felt that with strong serves and persistent attacks, we could eventually win the match. The girls kept pushing each other to play hard and end the match in two games. It is fun to watch all that energy on the court.”

Douglas 25-10-16, Scottsboro 19-25-14: Douglas won a decisive third game to take the match and the tournament championship.

“It was an exciting match,” Adkins said. “Evenly played. Douglas is a good hitting team that makes you defend the whole court.”

The the third game, Scottsboro led 10-7, then fell behind 14-10 before rallying to it at 14-all.

“It was a tense third game,” Adkins said. “I don’t know if I have been a part of such a well played match on both sides of the court.”

Freeman had six points and 12 kills for Scottsboro (3-2), while Ashlie Gann had 15 points, three aces and six kills. Bellomy and McCrary had nine points each. Ferrell had seven and two kills.

Regular season

Crossville 11-25-25-25, Scottsboro 25-21-18-23: Scottsboro won the first game, but Crossville rallied to win the next three and the match.

“We started strong and played real crisp volleyball,” Adkins said. “I believe we let up some in the second game because we started to miss some serves, and Crossville began to start clicking on their serves. We had trouble controlling the serves.”

Ferrell had nine kills and 16 points, while Gann has 16 points and seven kills. Proctor added seven kills and Freeman six. Duncan had six aces.
