Next stop: Depot Days

Published May 30, 2009

Ride the rails again next week at Stevenson's 2009 Depot Days festival.

This year's grand marshall is Loretta Barbee, who has served as the director of the Stevenson Depot Museum for almost 13 years.

This annual festival, which centers around Stevenson's railroad heritage, will begin Tuesday night with community bingo at 6 and continue through the main events on Saturday. All events associated with Depot Days take place in downtown Stevenson and at Stevenson City Park.

Wednesday's featured event will be a cake and ice cream social at 6 p.m., followed by a performance by Tommy Johnson, magician and comedian, at 7.

On Thursday through Saturday, there will be a photo exhibit and sale of pictures taken by the late Michael Ragan, who was a photographer in Stevenson for many years. The exhibit and sale will be held upstairs over the Michael Scott Learning Center in downtown Stevenson, which was formerly Ragan's studio.

Friday's events will begin with a pioneer breakfast in the morning and a hobo stew competition at 6 p.m., followed by an auction at 7.

Stevenson Library Board will host a book signing for Walter A. "Bobby" Russell from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday at the Stevenson Public Library. Russell was born in Mesena, Ga., and reared in Stevenson. After finishing high school in Stevenson, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served 28 years in various assignments throughout the world. Following a Hawaiian tour, he was assigned to Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., where he retired in 1979. Walt achieved the rating of Chief Master Sergeant.

In 1972 Walt, a history buff, became interested in genealogy and began researching the history of his paternal ancestors.  He accumulated, organized, and individually indexed more than 8,000 names of relatives and related families. Those families are Allen, Baker, Cargile, Cox, English, Gonce, Grider, Matthews, McIntire, McMahan, Potts, and Taylor, and many others.  His first effort to publish resulted in "Descendants of Matthew Russell and Related Families of Jackson County, Alabama (A Collection of Genealogies)."

Both hard cover and paperback books will be available for purchase. In addition, he will have copies available of his book, "Walter Alley and Related Families of the Tennessee Valley." For more details go to www.matthewrussellgenealogy.com

Saturday's events will last all day. There will be a 5K run at 7 a.m., and from 7-9 a.m., there will be a breakfast at Friday's Restaurant. Jim Bowman will perform at the gazebo from 8-9 a.m. Then, at 9 a.m. the grand marshal ceremony will be held at the flat car.

Performances are scheduled for the following times: Connie and Johnny, 9:30-10:30, Tennessee River Band, 11:30-12:30, Sherry and the Enterprise, 12:30-1:30, Miller Creek Band, 2:30-3:30, entertainment, 3-4, Muddy Water Band, 4-5 and Lake Liners dancers, 7-8.

The Depot Days Parade will be held from 10:30 until 11:30.

The weigh-in for the fishing tournament will be held from 1:30-2:30.

The Volkswagen Parade will be held downtown from 5-6.

The Ugly Woman Contest will be held from 6-7.

Depot Days will end with a street dance with the Cross Plains Band starting at 8 p.m. Admission will be $1.
