Board of Ed approves travel

The Scottsboro Board of Education approved out-of-state travel for two of its teachers and the Scottsboro High School Marching Band at their regularly scheduled meeting Monday night.

Director Kim Hass and the SHS band will visit Toronto, Canada in November after a unanimous vote by the board. The band will perform at the Randolph Performing Arts Academy during a trip planned for November 16-21.

Jackie LaRue, a science teacher at Scottsboro High School, received permission to attend the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Convention in Anaheim, California, April 5-7.

In other business the board:

• Honored Dr. George Buckner for his service to Scottsboro athletes over an almost 30-year period. Dr. Buckner is scheduled to retire from private practice in the near future.

• Heard reports on construction projects at Caldwell Elementary School and the track at Trammell Stadium.

• Recognized the Scottsboro High School wrestling team for their recent 5A State Championship, girls and boys who placed at the state indoor track meet and the girls basketball team for advancing to the 5A Regional Championship game at Jacksonville State University. The board also recognized the coaching staffs of each of those teams.
