TVA and other federal state and local agencies are scheduled to conduct an emergency preparedness exercise for Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant near Athens on Wednesday.
Residents in the area of the plant may see radiological monitoring teams. They may also hear on-site and off-site warning sirens.
The exercise will involve approximately 1,000 emergency responders from Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and Morgan Counties. Other emergency personnel fro north Alabama and southern Tennessee will observe the proceedings.
Representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will monitor the exercise. They will evaluate responders and are scheduled to hold a public meeting to discuss their impression at the Morgan County Emergency Operations Center Friday at 11 a.m.
Utilities operating nuclear power facilities are required by the NRC to hold annual exercises. The Department of Homeland Security evaluates emergency preparedness every other year.
