Stevenson celebrates Depot Days
Published June 1, 2007
The city of Stevenson will host its annual Depot Days celebration this year from June 5-10 in Downtown Stevenson and Stevenson City Park.
This year marks the 26th year for the Depot Days, started in 1981 to commemorate men who worked at the depot.
Now, the city continues to host the festival because it has become a staple in the community.
“(We keep hosting it) because it’s an annual event and everyone expects it,” said Loretta Barbee, coordinator of this year’s event.
Barbee said several graduating classes from North Jackson High School plan their reunions around the Depot Days festival.
“It’s a way for people who have moved away to see their friends,” said Barbee, who expects approximately 10,000 people to attend the festival.
The week-long event hosts different activities each night with the culmination of the festival Saturday, which is loaded with activities, both downtown and at the park.
On Tuesday, the first day of the festival, there will be bingo at 6 p.m., along with a Chamber breakfast that is being held on Tuesday morning. Wednesday, a gospel singing is scheduled for 6 p.m., and on Thursday, the ice cream social will start at 6 p.m. and singer Johnny Perry will perform at 7 p.m.
For Friday night, there are a few more activities planned for the downtown area. The Ho-Bo stew contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Citizens are encouraged to bring their favorite stew recipes prepared and ready to be judged. At 7 p.m., there will be an auction to benefit the Depot Days festival. Some items up for auction include: a car, a chain saw, a set of tires and a gas grill.
Additionally, Miller Creek will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Stevenson City Park.
On Saturday, there are several concerts scheduled downtown, as well as a performance by the Scottsboro Cloggers at 4:30 p.m.
The parade will be held ata 10:30 a.m., with Stevenson Mayor James Rickey Steele as Grand Marshal.
The “ugly women” contest, where men dressed as women compete to raise the most money, is at 1:30 p.m.
The street dance is also scheduled for Saturday. Main Street will be blocked off from 8 p.m until midnight for the dance, and the band Southern Flight will perform.
There are also activities planned for Stevenson City Park on Saturday.
The Volkswagen show will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the park. Events at the show include: live entertainment, a stereo sound-off contest and the all VW parade. Cost for the Volkswagen show is $5.
Sunday afternoon, there will be professional lawn mower racing at the park, starting at 1 p.m. Barbee said the mowers used for the race are special mowers with souped-up engines.
“(It’s) not just a lawn mover you mow the grass with,” Barbee said.
