Police continue investigation

Published July 22, 2009

Scottsboro Police are continuing their seven-week long investigation into an incident that resulted in Scottsboro physician Dr. Hardin Coleman being hospitalized.

Coleman was allegedly robbed and assaulted while returning to his office at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday, June 1 after completing rounds at Highlands Medical Center. His office is across the street from the hospital.

“The case is under investigation,” Scottsboro Police Chief Ralph Dawe said Tuesday. “Until it is completed we really can’t say much more about it. We are in the process of pinning down certain information and witnesses.”

Dawe stated that a weapon, believed to have been used in the incident, has been found and sent to the state forensics lab in Huntsville for processing.

Testing could take as long as 18 months depending on the backlog and priorities at the lab.

“All we have is what the victim told us,” Dawe, who indicated the case is being actively worked, said. “Wherever the evidence and facts take us we’ll shift our attention in that direction.”

Coleman, who returned to the hospital emergency room on his own after the incident, was treated and kept overnight for observation for stab wounds in the abdomen area.

The suspect was identified as a black male between 18 -25 years old who left the scene on foot. He was reportedly wearing a red shirt, denim shorts and large sunglasses.

According to reports the incident began when the suspect asked Coleman for money.

"Dr. Coleman gave the man some money," Scottsboro Police Department Sgt. Scott Matthews said the day after the incident. "But the suspect demanded all of it."

Dr. Coleman, who has apparently returned to work at his private practice in Scottsboro, did not return a phone call Tuesday asking for comments on his condition or the incident.

Anyone with information concerning the incident is requested to contact Investigator Chris Kirby at the Scottsboro Police Department. Kirby can be reached by phone at 256-574-4468 (Ext. 339).
