Spending a cool, sunny Sunday outdoors

Published October 20, 2009

I think yesterday is the day the band Chicago had in mind when they wrote their song "Saturday in the Park."

Granted yesterday was Sunday, and it was nowhere near the Fourth of July, but it was beautiful weather for an afternoon outdoors.

So when my friend called yesterday afternoon wanting to know why I suggested his wearing weather-appropriate clothing for our hang out time, my exact words were “We’re going walking in the park. It’s so pretty outside that its a shame to not be out in it.”

Sold.

Twenty minutes later, Nat and I were out at Jackson County Park, strolling along the paved walking trail.

Apparently, we weren't the only people with the idea of getting out for some fresh air, because we saw several people at the park. Some were walking their dogs around the trail and others just walking by themselves. A family or two also had their children at the playground area for a few hours of fun.

We made three loops around the track—including one of the nature trail routes because, apparently, wearing my technicolor dream scarf gives me a renewed sense of adventure—before getting back into the car for a random drive.

Now, random driving is something Nat and I have almost perfected over the years. We usually find places in the county where neither of us go very often to see what's going on in the area.

This technique also worked well when we were in college, getting lost in the Auburn and Opelika areas on purpose so we could learn how to get around town. The only real notable exception to this was the Tuesday night we ended up in downtown Tuskegee around 11.

But, meanwhile, back at the ranch ...

Yesterday, we decided a trip to Skyline was in order. After we got up the mountain (and after a little side trip to Boxes Cove), we stopped at the Cumberland Mountain Park for a few minutes of scenery before pressing on to Hytop and then through Paint Rock Valley.

The scenic views of Highway 65 made a nice backdrop for catching up. All the trees were hues of red, yellow and orange, and when the sun hit the leaves just right, the whole stretch of road had a faint orange glow.

We got back to my house for chili and a TV Land marathon of “The Andy Griffith Show.”

I also spent a couple of hours on the phone with another friend last night before bed. We talked football and Clint Eastwood movies before I dominated the conversation with randomness (let's be honest—it's just what I do, intentionally or not). But Brandon's a good sport and a good listener.

After the stress of watching Saturday night's football games, just hanging out with friends—either in person or in spirit—made for a nice Sunday.

A nice day, indeed.
