Scottsboro seniors ready

Published May 28, 2009

Scottsboro High School's Class of 2009 will graduate this Friday night, and the senior class officers would like to remind parents and guests to please make sure the ceremony remains dignified.

Over the past few years, graduation ceremonies at Scottsboro High School have been disrupted by overly enthusiastic guests who make so much noise cheering for their graduate that the names of subsequent students cannot be heard. In some instances, cow bells, air horns and other noisemakers have even been brought into the gym, disrupting the ceremony.

The senior council asks that all applause be held until the end of the ceremony. They also ask that everyone remain seated until after everyone has graduated, and the ceremony has ended. Photos may be taken from the bleachers, and there will be plenty of time for photos after graduation.

Beth, Westmoreland, president of the senior class, asked parents and guests to be respectful of everyone during the graduation ceremony.

"We want it to be very dignified and respectful to all of the seniors," Westmoreland said.

Class secretary Megan Ferrell added that graduation is a special moment for all seniors.

"We do not want anyone's name not to be heard," said Robert Henshaw, class treasurer.

"Commencement exercises are for us as a class, not just an individual," said Chante Fossett, vice president of the senior class. "Everyone deserves respect."

"This is a fantastic senior class," said Dr. Judy Berry, Superintendent of Scottsboro Schools. "They are one of the strongest classes we have ever had academically and character wise. I hope everyone will respect their wishes."

Scottsboro High School Principal Dale Hancock agreed.

"I want them to have the recognition they deserve," Hancock said.

The class officers also has some advice for their fellow seniors on graduation night.

"Be careful, and don't do anything to ruin the future you have planned," Henshaw said.

The 2009 senior class is an exceptionally close-knit group that Westmoreland describes as "very laid back."

Westmoreland said her favorite memory from her senior year was homecoming. The class opted to all sit on their class float instead of having a traditional float they built together. Instead of spending time building a float, the class met each night of homecoming week at the fire station to have cookouts and themed events. She said she will always remember the time the class spent together.

Graduation will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in Hambrick Hall at Scottsboro High School.
