Seeing Red
Published October 30, 2009
Students at schools throughout the county are celebrating Red Ribbon Week, a national drug prevention campaign.
According to its Web site, Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country, serving as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for drug prevention against illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
The week also recognizes the sacrifice of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed by drug traffikers in Mexico.
Education is also a big part of Red Ribbon Week.
Classes at Caldwell Elementary School listened to discussions on drug awareness with school counselor Scott Hodges, and students and teachers at Nelson Elementary will spend the next two weeks focusing on making healthy choices for healthier lives.
As a fun way to observe Red Ribbon Week, students at the local schools were allowed to dress in accordance with the day’s theme. Some of the theme days included “Sock It To Drugs” day, where students could wear mismatched socks, “Drugs Turn You Inside Out” day, where students were encouraged to wear their clothes inside out, and “Team Up Against Drugs” day, where kids could wear their favorite sports team jerseys to school.
Collins Elementary School will have a Drug Free Celebration that includes music, games and prizes this afternoon at 1:30.
